Before getting into methods, it is important to understand that watermarks in PDFs come in two very different forms — and the method that works for one will not work for the other.
Vector/text watermarks are added as a separate layer on top of the page content. They exist as independent objects in the PDF structure and can potentially be selected and deleted using the right tool.
Flattened/baked-in watermarks have been merged into the page itself. There is no separate layer — the watermark pixels are part of the page image. These cannot be removed cleanly by any tool; they can only be covered or obscured.
How to tell which type you have
Open the PDF in Adobe Reader or Chrome and try to click on the watermark text. If you can select it, highlight it, or the cursor changes when you hover over it, it is a layer watermark that may be removable. If nothing happens when you click it, it is baked in.
Method 1 — Adobe Acrobat (removes layer watermarks)
If the watermark was added using Acrobat's watermark tool, Acrobat can remove it cleanly:
- Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat.
- Go to Tools > Edit PDF.
- Click Watermark > Remove.
- Save the file.
This only works for watermarks that were added using Acrobat's own watermark feature. Watermarks added by other software, or embedded during PDF creation, may not be removable this way.
Method 2 — Edit PDF and delete the watermark object
For layer watermarks in PDFs you have legitimate access to edit:
- Open Filero's Edit PDF tool.
- Upload the PDF.
- If the watermark is a text or image element sitting on top of the page, you may be able to select and delete it using the editing tools.
- Save the edited PDF.
Method 3 — Cover the watermark with a white box
For watermarks that cannot be deleted — either because they are baked in or because the PDF is restricted — covering them with a white rectangle is a practical workaround for documents where the watermark sits in a predictable location (such as a diagonal DRAFT stamp):
- Open the PDF in Filero's Edit PDF tool.
- Draw a white filled rectangle over the watermark area.
- Save the PDF.
This works best for watermarks in margins or corners. For diagonal watermarks that overlap with content, covering it will also cover the underlying text.
Method 4 — Convert to image and back
This approach does not remove the watermark — it converts the whole page to a flat image, at which point the watermark is permanently part of the image. This is only useful if you need a "clean looking" version for a specific purpose and the watermark is light enough to be barely visible after compression.

Can I remove a watermark from a PDF I downloaded online?
Technically possible in some cases, but watermarks on commercially distributed PDFs (trial software, paid reports, licensed content) are there for a reason. Why does the watermark come back when I print?
Some PDFs use JavaScript or print-specific layers to add watermarks that only appear when printing. These are separate from the visible watermark and require Acrobat to remove — they cannot be deleted by editing the visible page content.
Can I remove a watermark from a scanned PDF?
A scanned PDF is an image — the watermark is baked in at the pixel level. It cannot be cleanly removed. Image editing software like Photoshop can sometimes reduce or cover a watermark on a scanned page, but full clean removal is generally not possible.
