Allergens are declared separately as "Contains" followed by the group names, and cross-contact as "May contain". Gluten cereals are named by the cereal. Peanuts and tree nuts are both declared as Nut. Sulphite is declared at 10 mg/kg or more. Food service establishments must also show allergen information against items on menus, and symbols are allowed. Based on regulation 5(14) and regulation 9 of the FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations 2020. Verify against your local rules. Last verified 2026-11-08. FSSAI: Labelling and Display Regulations
Regulation 5(14) of the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations 2020 says foods known to cause allergy are declared separately as "Contains" followed by their names: cereals containing gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt), crustacean, milk, egg, fish, nut (peanuts and tree nuts), soy, and sulphite at 10 mg/kg or more.
Gluten cereals are declared by the name of the cereal, such as wheat. The others use the group name: Crustacean, Milk, Egg, Fish, Nut, Soy and Sulphite. Peanuts and tree nuts are both declared as Nut.
Where an allergen may be present through cross-contamination, the regulation allows a separate "May contain" declaration. The FSSAI FAQ says similar wording such as "May contain traces of" can be used.
A full FSSAI label for packaged food needs more than allergens, such as the licence number, the veg or non-veg logo, nutrition information and dates. Use these labels for the allergen part and check the rest of your label against the regulations.
Declared separately as "Contains" followed by the names, for example "Contains Wheat, Milk, Nut". Cross-contact can be shown as "May contain".
